"Breaking Down Barriers: Overcoming Challenges to Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace"
After substantial social, political, economic, and technological changes in recent decades, prominent corporations are taking initiatives to enhance workplace diversity and inclusion to thrive in this cutthroat competitive world. In an increasingly global market, organizations with diversified workers are better prepared to cater to various external clients.
Understanding that each human is unique and recognizing our distinct characteristics are part of the concept of diversity. Race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, age, physical ability, religious beliefs, political views or other ideologies are manifestations of these. It is the investigation of these disparities in a supportive, safe, and encouraging atmosphere. It is about getting to know one another and going beyond basic tolerance to embrace and celebrate the rich qualities of diversity that each human possesses.
Workforce diversity refers to employee similarities and differences based on age, cultural background, physical abilities and disabilities, race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. Diversity management is a process intended to create and maintain a positive work environment where the similarities and differences of individuals are valued so that all can reach their potential and maximize their contributions to an organization’s strategic goals and objectives.
The impacts of cultural diversity in the workplace are determined by how successfully organizational leaders manage it. Top management may improve the good effects of cultural diversity in the workplace while reducing the negative effects with proper strategic planning. (Martin, 2014) The consequences of failing to manage diversity would be a lack of skills, competencies, and attitudes in employees, which would ultimately increase employee turnover and undermine individual and organizational performance significantly.
Barriers to workplace inclusion and Diversity
· Unconscious bias: Unconscious bias is any association created between diverse attributes such as gender, race, and culture that is made without conscious knowledge. It indicates that we are naturally drawn to people who are similar to ourselves in terms of ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
· Lack of role models: A lack of relatable role models in top positions is one of the major barriers to people feeling included in the workplace. Seeing someone from a similar background, particularly if they are a minority, is likely to motivate and encourage employees to foster a more productive and inventive culture.
· Communication barriers: Companies that hire a diverse range of people may encounter communication issues inside teams. Language obstacles, as well as cultural disparities in timekeeping and personal life patterns, may develop. Employees may feel frustrated, excluded, and unheard of as a result of this.
· Lack of training: The root of many problems is the education of current and prospective personnel.
· Resistance to change: Resistance to change might be one of the most serious obstacles to improved workplace diversity. As new rules and workers are implemented in an organization, certain employees may be resistant to the changes. Stereotyping, discrimination, and disrespectful statements are just a few of the unpleasant effects of a resistant workforce (Diversity in Tech,2023).
Strategies to enhance workplace diversity
Strategic initiatives are required for the
organization to overcome the above obstacles.
· Embrace diversity as part of your hiring process: An excellent strategy can help to recruit managers avoid picking candidates that are identical to themselves. It is necessary to look closely at how to evaluate and select diverse individuals.
· Manage diversity with leadership on board: It makes it easier to get the leadership team on board with increasing diversity. As a result, there is a greater chance that the rest of the workforce will value diversity as well. The culture of the firm is established by the leadership.
· Take part in diversity training: Providing a variety of training courses to employees to promote a diverse workplace. Neurodiversity Training to teach management how to effectively manage neurodivergent personnel, or Disability Awareness Training to make the workplace more inclusive of people with disabilities
· Implement diversity policies that support diverse backgrounds: Offering benefits such as flexible working hours and on-site childcare facilities boosts the company's appeal to employees with diverse interests and needs.
· Flexible working diversity strategies: Flexible working arrangements benefit disabled workers as well since they can help them achieve a better work-life balance that takes their impairment into account. (Saxena,2014)
The Advantages of Workplace Diversity
Increased productivity: A diversified workplace fosters new ideas and procedures. To appreciate and enjoy the diverse qualities that each person possesses, it is important to get to know one another and go beyond simple tolerance.
Increased creativity: When people from different cultures and backgrounds collaborate, they can be more creative. This is due to the increased number of people with diverse viewpoints and solutions to problems, which increases the likelihood of a practical solution to a workplace problem.
Improved cultural awareness: A varied range of cultures in the workplace enables businesses to deal with the various nuances in a global economy.
A positive reputation: Businesses with a diverse workforce are frequently seen as better employers. Prospective employees desire an employer who accepts and tolerates people from different backgrounds and treats their staff equally.
Increase in marketing opportunities: When potential employees or consumers perceive that a company has a diverse workplace, they feel more connected to the company. Advertising representing mature-aged, differently-abled or ethnically diverse persons encourages applicants to apply, promotes a favourable reputation, raises market awareness, and develops a more diversified client base (Ability Options.2022).
